Following representations by the INTO on behalf of teachers who are pregnant, the Department of Education has clarified in Circular 0021/21 issued today, that school staff who are pregnant should temporarily continue to work remotely from Monday, 12 April until further notice.
The department has sought clarifications from the HSE on their earlier guidance (9 February) for pregnant education staff. The INTO has been advised that when the Department of Education has considered clarifications provided by the HSE, they will provide a further clarification to schools.
The INTO will continue to advocate for a precautionary approach in relation to our members who are pregnant.
Circular 0021/21 reiterates how the arrangements for special covid leave will apply in schools.
Section 4.3 of the circular refers to pregnant employees
Pregnant Employees
4.3.1 The HSE has published guidance for the education sector in respect of pregnant employees and the Department is currently seeking clarifications from the HSE on this guidance.
4.3.2 When the Department has considered the HSE clarifications, any changes to the current working arrangements for pregnant employees will be communicated to employers.
4.3.3. In the meantime, a pregnant employee should temporarily continue to work remotely i.e. working from home.
