The Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO) has welcomed our 50,000th member of the trade union recently. Ruth Kearney, a recent graduate of Marino Institute of Education joins the union during one of the most challenging years on record.
Reflecting on her time in Marino, Ruth commented:
Throughout my years in Marino lecturers often reiterated the importance of joining the INTO once we had graduated. Being part of such a supportive and inclusive union grants teachers the reassurance that their voices and concerns are being heard.”
On her motivation to join the union, Ruth said:
Teaching is one of the most challenging and rewarding jobs that anyone could have. As teachers we have the opportunity to make a positive impact on children’s lives by supporting and celebrating all milestones, big and small. We create safe spaces for children to explore, create and develop in a happy environment. Joining the INTO allows teachers to be a member of a local union where they can meet and address local concerns. As the largest teacher’s trade union in Ireland, the INTO listens to the concerns of their members and continues to make important developments on our behalf.
A colleague said to me at the start of the year “You wouldn’t drive without a licence, so don’t teach without one. It provides a great sense of relief to know that when you should need any assistance the INTO are there waiting to help. We are better together.”
INTO General Secretary John Boyle welcomed Ruth to the union, celebrating her membership as a key moment for the union as it continues to grow both North and South.
Mr Boyle said:
It’s a testament to the hard work of this union that new teachers, finding their feet in the profession, still value seeking membership. Over the course of their professional lives, the INTO is right there with them in the classroom. From advice to advocacy, we pride ourselves on being member focused and grassroots led.”
