The Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO) is appalled and deeply saddened by the killing of teachers and other humanitarian workers in the latest Israeli strikes on Gaza, as reported by the United Nations today. We extend our deepest condolences to their families, students, and communities, and we stand in solidarity with all civilians caught in this devastating conflict.
The ongoing violence in Gaza and the West Bank has resulted in an unthinkable loss of life, the destruction of homes and schools, and the forced displacement of millions. As an education union, we are particularly horrified by the destruction of schools and the targeting of educators, who play a crucial role in providing hope and stability in times of crisis. Education must never be a casualty of war, and teachers must never become targets.
INTO reiterates its urgent call for an immediate and full ceasefire to protect civilians and enable the unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza. The indiscriminate bombardment has devastated communities, orphaned children, and left an entire population on the brink of famine.
We join our fellow trade unions in condemning the killing and maiming of civilians, including children and educators. The systematic targeting of civilian infrastructure, including schools, hospitals, and aid facilities, is a grave violation of international law and must be unequivocally condemned.
The INTO welcomes the upcoming meeting this week between the Irish Congress of Trade Unions and UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese, which represents a critical opportunity to address the severe human rights violations unfolding in the region. We urge the Irish government and the European Union to take action, including the imposition of sanctions and the suspension of bilateral agreements with Israel, in response to its continued breaches of international law.
We encourage our members to stand in solidarity by participating in the national protest in Dublin this Saturday, ensuring that the voice of Irish teachers is heard loud and clear in the call for peace, justice, and the protection of innocent lives.
The INTO remains committed to advocating for the protection of educators and students, the restoration of educational institutions and lasting peace in the region.
