The Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO) is asking members around the country to light a candle today in memory of Ashling Murphy, the young teacher killed in Tullamore Co Offaly on Wednesday.
There have been outpourings of sympathy from the Irish public for Ms Murphy (23), particularly from colleagues in the profession.
Ashling completed her teacher training only three months ago and taught at Scoil Naomh Colmcille in Durrow, just outside Tullamore, where she was on placement since March before she took up her position there as a qualified teacher in September.
Vigils are being held around the country today in memory of Ashling and in sympathy with her family and the school community in Durrow.
The INTO will today be attending a vigil on behalf of members at Leinster House at 4pm. The event is being organised by the National Women’s Council of Ireland and is one of many being held around the country.
The union encourages members to attend any vigils close to them if possible and to light a candle between 4 and 5pm today in memory of Ashling.
We encourage schools to light a candle today in your school building to show the entire school community stands together with one of our own.
