Moon Tell Me Truth – Poetry Exhibition

  • 21 Sep 2024 - 11 Oct 2024
  • The Ireland Institute, Pearse Centre
  • Organised by INTO Palestine Ambassadors Group

Moon Tell Me Truth is a travelling exhibition of 60 illustrated poems created by children aged 9 to 15 from Gaza, Palestine for a competition run by the British educational charity The Hands Up Project, and published in a book with a foreword by award-winning poet Alice Oswald. The poems have been exhibited throughout England and Scotland and in Belfast.

From the 21 September 2024 this exhibition will be showing in Dublin for three weeks. The exhibition is hosted by the INTO Palestine Ambassadors Group and will be open to the general public but with a special invitation to students from all primary and post-primary schools. We hope that teachers will take the opportunity to take their classes to this exhibition and provide them with the chance to read and respond to the voices of the innocent children of Gaza living through Apartheid and the recent bombardment of their homeland.

Tragically, most students featured in the exhibition are now displaced and their schools have been damaged or destroyed during the war on Gaza. Two students were killed by Israeli airstrikes in October 2023 – Obada Mohammad Abu Oda, 14, and Fatema Saidam, 9. Fatema’s poem Eyes are for looking has been translated and shared all over the world.

Eyes are for looking
And seeing sun
Tongues are for greeting
And saying fun
Legs are for walking slowly
And also run
Hands are for shaking with friends
Not for shooting gun

We believe this exhibition will provide a unique opportunity for Irish primary and post-primary pupils to respond to the Gazan children’s poetry – through words and/or art – thus enhancing the viewers’ experience and further developing a sense of empathy with the innocent children of Gaza who need our solidarity and compassion during these times.
