Supply Teachers’ Pay & Conditions of Service

Supply Teachers' Pay

Supply teachers are paid a 195th of the salary point on the teachers’ main pay scale, including any Upper Pay Scale (UPS) points which they have reached.

For example, the current M1 salary is £24,137, giving a daily rate of £123.77.

The hourly rate for supply teachers is the salary point divided by 1,265 hours; for example, £19.08 is the hourly rate on M1.

Pay Scale Annual Pay Daily Pay Hourly Pay
M1 24,137 123.77 19.08
M2 26,045 133.56 20.58
M3 28,139 144.30 22.24
M4 30,305 155.41 23.95
M5 32,693 167.65 25.84
M6 35,277 180.90 27.88
UPS1 38,216 195.97 30.21
UPS2 39,630 203.23 31.32
UPS3 41,094 210.73 32.48

The employment of prematurely retired teachers in receipt of an enhanced pension is an exception to this. Prematurely retired teachers in receipt of an enhanced pension should only be employed if no other supply teacher is available and should be paid on M1 of the pay scale. If a teacher is in receipt of a pension without added years, they should be paid on the normal pay point they have reached.

Supply Teachers' Professional Duties

Supply teachers’ duties are the same as a teacher without a teaching allowance or any other paid responsibility. These statutory duties are set out in the Teachers’ (Terms and Conditions of Employment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) otherwise known as the Jordanstown Agreement.

As these Regulations do not differentiate between the duties of supply teachers and other teachers, schools can have a reasonable expectation that a supply teacher would carry out all of the duties of a teacher. However, by the same measure, schools should be considerate to supply teachers when it comes to after-school events such as parents’ evenings, organised in a short period of notification, which happens to coincide with a period of supply teacher employment in another school.

Supply teacher duties directed by the school must fall within the 1,265 hours’ directed time budget, which will be spread over 195 days within the school year.

If you are a supply teacher and feel you are being treated less favourably than other teachers in the school where you are employed, you should contact the INTO for advice.
