Why Register?
Teaching in Northern Ireland is a graduate profession. Only teachers who can demonstrate that they meet the criteria required for professional recognition will be admitted to the Register.
If you want to work as a teacher in a grant–aided school in Northern Ireland, you must be registered with GTCNI in accordance with Article 35(3) of the Education (Northern Ireland) Order 1998. Employing authorities are required to ensure that they only employ teachers that are registered with the GTCNI.

Latest News re: (GTCNI) Registration Fee: April 2022
Following the Education Minister's announcement of her intention to dissolve the GTCNI and to stand down the GTCNI’s Council with immediate effect, the Department has received several pieces of correspondence enquiring if GTCNI teacher registration fees will still be deducted from teachers’ salaries for the 2022/23 registration year. For the avoidance of any confusion or doubt in this matter, DE have provided the following clarification in their correspondence of 8 April 2022 (pdf).
NISTR REGISTRATION
If you want to work as a supply/substitute teacher in a grant–aided school in Northern Ireland, you must be registered with the Northern Ireland Substitute Teacher Register (NISTR). NISTR is a free service which is operated by the Education Authority (EA).
NISTR also carry out criminal records checks which can take a minimum of 8 weeks and you are advised to register with them as early as possible.
